General Aviation News is published by Flyer Media, Inc., which lists its corporate headquarters in Lakewood, Washington, with writers, photographers, editors and sales staff working from across the country. The paper traces its start to 1949, when it was called Sell-A-Plane; later names included Northwest Flyer, Western Flyer and General Aviation News & Flyer. The Sclair family entered aviation media in 1970 by buying the Northwest Flyer, and in 1989 bought General Aviation News and merged it with the Western Flyer before shortening the name. Flyer Media also publishes Living With Your Plane, a national directory of residential airparks.

Its audience is pilots and aircraft owners rather than FBO operators, which makes it a channel for reaching the piston and light-turbine customers who buy fuel, hangar space and flight training at a GA airport. The print edition comes out twice a month and is mailed to individuals, businesses and airports nationwide; the October 8, 2026 issue was posted as a PDF. Online, the site runs news, features, opinion, product news, NTSB and ASRS accident reports, pictures of the day, an events calendar and classifieds, and it accepts press release submissions.

Readers can sign up for a free email newsletter of daily general aviation news, and the publisher says the paper reaches 110,000 readers each month. Advertising is sold through an advertise page that does not publish rates. For an FBO, the practical uses are listing fly-ins and open houses in the events calendar, sending news about airport projects and services, and display or classified advertising aimed at owner-pilots. The about page does not name the editors.
