USAIG

United States Aircraft Insurance Group dates to 1928, when two pilots organized a pool of insurers to underwrite aviation risk. USAIG is not a single company but a pool of member insurers; capacity for its aviation lines is shared by Columbia Insurance Company, which holds 50%, and ACE American Insurance Company, and members must carry at least an A rating and $1 billion in statutory surplus. United States Aviation Underwriters, a subsidiary of General Re and part of Berkshire Hathaway, manages the pool from headquarters in New York City's financial district with underwriting and field claims offices around the country. A sister pool, CAIG, founded in 1937, serves Canada from Toronto.

USAIG's airport liability product is built for private and fixed-base operators and anyone doing business at private, municipal or commercial airports. It can combine premises liability, products and completed operations, contractual liability, personal injury, premises medical payments and hangarkeepers liability, with further coverages added to match the operation. USAIG also writes general aviation and airline hull and liability, aerospace products liability, unmanned aircraft and corporate non-owned aircraft liability, and runs safety programs for policyholders.

USAIG sells only through licensed aviation insurance agents and brokers, and its site lists underwriters and claims staff by name, department and location so a broker can reach the right office. It says its claims team is the largest in aviation insurance and works worldwide. Each member company funds a trust account covering 100% of its net liabilities, overseen by an advisory council.
